Can a mere novel be much, much more than that? Can it be a beacon shining in our apostate world? It can. And is in this incredibly thoughtful story set in 1930s /40s Poland about those who suffered unthinkable losses and degradations forced upon them when invaded by a Germany seduced by the evil of Hitler, his Nazis, and others who could not or would not see.

Pawel, a mostly nominal Roman Catholic, already has a heavy mentally-buried burden he's carried since childhood when another burden is thrust upon him. The author's cogent theology (not the "new age", sticky sweet, feel good stuff with no substance nor backbone being passed off as Christianity today), historically accurate and sound is put forth in well-written passages as Pawel finds his way out of the darkness of the past and into the light by following the love of Christ.

Not preachy, simply unvarnished truth, our struggles with it and against it, our will against that of the Eternal. The author, Michael O'Brien, has done the near impossible, that of using sound Judeo-Christian theology to create a work of fiction that leaves the reader more than he was at the beginning, either partly or, if he's willing, seeing and understanding the whole clear, hard but uncomplicated message.

Sophia House Children of the Last Days Michael D O'Brien 9781586170394 Books Reviews

Intriguing book - well worth the read - again even.
This is a prequel to Father Elijah An Apocalypse, and the second novel I've consumed from Michael D. O'Brien. He's a consummate storyteller and his characters are exceptional and authentic. I never knew it was possible to read literature-quality fiction and experience moving, devotional-type edification in a single book. Truly remarkable and highly recommended to readers who are searching for meaningful Christian fiction.
Read Fr. Elijah first, not knowing about Sophia House. If you can, read this first, then Fr. Elig
Jah, then Elijah in Jerusalem. Going to re-read Fr. Elijah!! Can't wait to get started!!
This is a great book that examines a man as he struggles to overcome sin in his life and grow in wisdom and Charity. Excellent knowledge of human nature. It’s somewhat predictable in someways but I greatly enjoyed reading it
This is the second novel by O'Brien I've read, the first being "Father Elijah". Sophia House is a prequel to Father Elijah. The story is dramatic and the ideas in the book should be absorbed by Catholics (well, all Christians, but the intended audience is probably Catholic). And presenting the ideas in the form of such an accessible novel is wonderful. I genuinely liked the book although there is occasional weakness in the dialog. But keep reading anyway. The ending is dramatic and it left me wanting more. This book warrants re-reading but I think I'll go back and re-read Father Elijah first.

Once again, Ignatius Press has published a book that really does matter.
I cannot even begin to describe how good this book is. And I'm considered by my friends as an extremely critical (of books and films) person.

On the surface, this book is about homosexuality, art, and Poland during WWII.

But it goes so much deeper than that, probing and illuminating the meaning of Fatherhood, Beauty, Longing, and the Holy.

Its a book influenced by Judaism, Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Nazism, Modernism, and Mysticism.

Some passages, in their prose, border on the best kind of poetry. There are several passages in this book that have burned into my mind. I don't think I shall forget them until I die.

If you love Dostoevsky, you'll love this book.

I know this is such a bad review. I didn't even try to explain it, because it is too good for that.

You really will not regret reading this, no matter what your background.

[btw, due to the disturbing (non-graphic) content, I wouldn't recommend this for anyone under the age of 15.]
This is the third time I have read this book. It gives a good explanation of things in Father Elijah, but it addresses problems of the main character, Pawel, that are not pleasant. Unfortunately, that is mostly what I remembered from the first two times. I'm so glad I read it again. Sophia House is written on more than one level. It is full of wisdom and beauty. It addresses World War II and the holocaust, but it also addresses human nature in a timeless way. It is very therapeutic. I will surely read it again. I recommend it to readers who have read Father Elijah. I am rereading the O'Brien books waiting for him to write another one. He really has the number of our modern world, but he presents our problems in a loving, hopeful way. Read the book. Read it!
